News Items Mentioned: Malicious worm aims to bite Apple http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4723390.stm Mac users are being warned about what has been described as one of the first viruses for Apple's OS X software. The malicious program, known as Leap-A, tries to spread via Apple's iChat instant messaging program. The worm disguises itself as images of Apple's forthcoming version of its operating system, called Leopard, and plunders buddy lists if installed. Security firms said Leap-A was not widespread and was unlikely to catch many Apple users. Apple Seeks (Poetic) Justice http://www.osx86project.org/ A gentleman who goes by the name maxxuss, who had posted the code to install Apple software on Intel Machines, posted word that a few pieces of Mac OS X Tiger look for a secret message in that gets decrypted via the TPM, basically a decoder ring for geeks. It seems that Apple wasn’t just content with sending an obvious message – they wanted one that sounded pretty too. There once was a user that whined his existing OS was so blind, he'd do better to pirate an OS that ran great but found his hardware declined. Please don't steal Mac OS! Really, that's way uncool. (C) Apple Computer, Inc. Side note, Maxxus has shut down his forums where the downloadable code and instructions were made available because he received a DMCA violation notice. The file was pulled from most free file hosting websites that it was posted to as potentially copyrighted material. About the Mac OS X 10.4.5 Update http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303179 The Mac OS X 10.4.5 Update (delta) updates Mac OS X 10.4.4 to version 10.4.5 on both Intel-based Macs and PowerPC-based Macs. Microsoft Fixes Flag That Says Symantec Software Is Spyware http://www.informationweek.com/security/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=180200780&subSection=Viruses+and+Patches[/url] Some users got error messages wrongly saying that Symantec software was riddled with spyware and recommending users remove the 'faulty' packages. Symantec and Microsoft are now working together to help these customers. Microsoft has corrected the false flagging, it said Monday. Symantec, meanwhile, announced that it had crafted a free tool to repair damaged installations of its Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) Corporate Edition and Symantec Client Security (SCS). End of support for Windows 98 and Windows Me http://www.microsoft.com/windows/support/endofsupport.mspx July 11, 2006 will bring a close to Extended Support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me as part of the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft will retire public and technical support, including security updates, by this date. The Microsoft Web site will continue to host a wealth of previous How-to, Troubleshooting, and Configuration content for anyone who may need self-service. MySpace Rises As New Online Star http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060212/ap_on_hi_te/rising_online_space The Internet has a rising star whose name isn't Google. Just over 2 years old, MySpace now has 2 1/2 times the traffic of Google Inc., and it quickly eclipsed Friendster as the top social-networking site where users build larger and larger circles of friends. MySpace learned from predecessors and figured out the right tools to package. And when its founders noticed heavy usage among musicians and fans, MySpace embraced that community with custom features. College students, meanwhile, can rate their professors and find classmates or alumni. Others play games, view classified ads, send online party invitations or rate the brave on how "hot" they are. |
