News Items Mentioned: Google sued as source of porn http://www.newsday.com/business/ny-bzgoog0505,0,2601653.story?coll=ny-top-headlines Nassau County legislator filed a lawsuit Thursday claiming Google Inc. generates "billions of dollars from the pornography trade and illicit profiteers." The lawsuit by four-term legislator Jeffrey Toback (D-Oceanside) calls the Internet search engine the world's largest distributor of child pornography, claiming that child porn is part of the company's business model. Google "continues to put its economic gains ahead of the interests and well-being of America's children," the lawsuit, filed in Nassau State Supreme Court alleges. Though Google provides a filter called SafeSearch, it doesn't eliminate all adult material/ Toback, self-described as "not the most computer-literate guy," said he learned of the filter three days ago. He said he didn't know if the computers in his home have commercial filtering software that blocks pornography and other material unsuitable for children. 'Swiss army knife' worm spreads http://www.pcmag.co.uk/vnunet/news/2155282/swiss-army-knife-worm-spreads A new worm has been detected that is far more advanced than most malware picked up to date by investigators. W32.Nugache.A spreads via email and IM channels but also includes a novel peer-to-peer element. Once a PC is infected it keeps in contact with the controller and other infected machines via a peer-to-peer network using TCP port 8 rather than relying on IRC. Goodbye BearShare, Hello $30M http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/topnews/wpn-60-20060505RIAAGoodbyeBearShareHello30M.html Online file-sharing service BearShare, along with operators Free Peers Inc., is packing it up due to a $30 million settlement with the recording industry. The conditions of the settlement were agreed to by the P2P company to avoid further copyright infringement litigation. Free Peers also agreed not to set up another unlicensed music services. As a federal judge reviews the settlement for final approval, Free Peers has agreed to sell the BearShare technology rights, domain name and user data to iMesh Inc. New York-based iMesh shelled out $4.1 million to the RIAA in 2004 in a file-swapping settlement. In 2005, the company went back online as a licensed service. BearShare was among several P2P service to receive cease-and-desist letters from the RIAA in September of last year. Others include Warez P2P, Limewire, eDonkey, and Soulseek, all of whom have not yet reached a settlement. Spammers hit back at anti-spam company http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/05/03/bluesecurity_spammers_hitback/ Blue Security obviously has made someone mad. Spammers have fought back by hitting Blue Security customers with thousands of messages. The messages places the blame on Blue Security and tells customers to stop using the anti-spam service. "You signed up because you were expecting to recieve a lesser amount of spam, unfortunately, due to the tactics used by BlueSecurity, you will end up recieving this message, or other nonsensical spams 20-40 times more than you would normally," the message says. In addition to the spam, Blue Security claims its Web site may have been the target of a distributed denial of service attack, after it was rendered inaccessible on Tuesday. The site continues to be slow today. Blue Frog works by putting users into a do-not-spam database. The online order forms of the spamming companies are then filled out with a request to quit sending spam. When this is scaled up to millions of orders, you can appreciate the impact this can have on spammers. 694 million people online worldwide http://www.physorg.com/news65976817.html Some 694 million people worldwide over age 15 are now using the Internet, about 14 percent of the total population in this age group, according to a survey released Thursday. According to the report, the United States still had the single largest Internet audience, of 152 million users, followed by China with 72 million. Third on the list was Japan with 52 million users, followed by Germany (32 million) and Britain (30 million). |
